Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Our Towns Habitat!

Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes, races and beliefs, professions and skills. One thing that all Our Towns Habitat volunteers have in common: they are critically important to furthering the organization’s mission in our community.

Through construction, retail, repair and more, volunteers help Our Towns Habitat impact hundreds of families each year.

Volunteer FAQ

Safety and Training

Safety is our top priority for all Our Towns Habitat Volunteers, and we need your commitment to work safely—for your own safety and the safety of those around you. At the beginning of each build day, construction site supervisors will review all safety rules with you, but we also encourage you to review the information on this page prior to volunteering, to help you come to the site prepare to be safe.

What to wear:

  • Closed-toed shoes (tennis shoes, work boots, etc.) No flip-flops, sandals or slippers.
  • Long pants or shorts (which may get dirty or covered in paint – be prepared in case your clothing is permanently damaged on site).
  • Optional: a hat and/or sunglasses.

What to bring:

  • A completed and signed waiver of liability. All minors must have their waivers signed by a parent or guardian.
  • A refillable water bottle.
  • Sunscreen.

Habitat will provide:

  • All tools and supplies – including work gloves, hard hats and safety glasses. If you bring any of your own tools or equipment, please label them with your name.
  • Snacks for the mid-morning break around 10 a.m.
  • A water cooler.
  • A first aid kit in case of emergency.

Ages 12-13 (accompanied by an adult only): landscaping
Ages 14-15 (accompanied by an adult only): cleaning, painting, landscaping and installing soil-retention fencing
Ages 16-17: all construction tasks that don’t involve climbing ladders or operating power tools

Please take some time to watch these brief safety orientation videos before joining us to build.

Inclement weather policy:

Construction volunteers should show up rain or shine once they have committed to a particular day. Rarely, poor weather or unforeseen delays will interrupt our schedule or a particular task.  We will make every effort to reach volunteers ahead of time to notify them if their task assignment has changed.

Cancellations or delays will also be posted on our VolunteerUp! calendar. Please contact Volunteer Program Manager Cathy Petriano for more information.
