build your career

Thanks to the generosity of founding donors Bill and Donna Kenney, Our Towns has launched the “Build Your Career” scholarship program for qualified students living in an Our Towns Habitat for Humanity home. This scholarship program provides up to $2,000 in scholarship funds each year to one or more eligible students.

1st Scholarship Awarded

We are excited to announce that Shaniya Turner is the first student to receive this award! She is currently a junior in the social work program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a minor in Human Development and Family Studies. Upon graduating, she plans to work as a case manager for homeless families to help them get back on their feet and into stable housing. Congratulations, Shaniya!

The first scholarship funds were awarded for the 2019-20 academic year. To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Have lived in an Our Towns Habitat for Humanity home for at least 12 months AND be a Habitat mortgage holder in good standing, or the spouse, child or legal dependent of the mortgage holder.
  • Be a high school senior or graduate, have a GED certificate or be a current post-secondary undergraduate or nontraditional student.
  • Be eligible and plan to enroll for a minimum of three credit hours (or equivalent) per term for the 2019-20 academic year in an undergraduate degree or certificate program of study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational-technical program.
  • Have financial need, as demonstrated by submitting any college financial aid eligibility determination and/or award letter.
